Who We Are
Iona Estates are a group of tea and spice estates, renowned for a range of specialty teas and spices, created from a delicate blend of high-grown and mid-grown tea leaves and spices, crafted for the connoisseur. We are making our mark across Europe and the world; standing out from among the hundreds of plantations from an island famous for its world -class teas and spices.
Iona Estates comprises three plantations: Iona, We Eliya, and Gammaduwa. Iona is located deep in the misty mountains of Agarapathana in the Dimbulla region; Gammaduwa sits above the valleys of the Matale district in the Kandy tea growing region, at elevations between 700-1,200 above sea level. We Eliya is located in the lower elevations of the Badulla district, in the Uva province at an elevation more suited for spices.
Together, the estates maintain 2,109 acres of tea, along with spices – including cinnamon, cardamom and pepper – and fuelwood. Sitting between 1,050m and 1,550m above sea level, our teas from Iona are ‘high grown’ and produce a fresh, golden-hued infusion that has a light and crisp flavour – making a delicate, yet distinctive cup of tea.
The teas that come from Gammaduwa belong to the Kandy region. This ‘mid grown’ tea produces a comparatively stronger and more full-bodied brew, with a unique, light auburn tone. We Eliya has been planted with an abundance of pepper and cinnamon, amongst other herbs and spices, that are used in our wellness range of teas and spices.
All three of our plantations are ethically managed under strict guidelines.
The communities that live in, and work with us at our plantations are provided with clean and safe accommodation, which are being progressively upgraded from the traditional line rooms to single and twin cottages; they are provided with good health plans, and remunerated above the government stipulated daily wage. Due to the high, rocky elevations at Gammaduwa, workers, who are mostly female, are transported to their work sites and back, to ensure they do not have to carry the tea leaves on their backs.
